Louisville Distance Project: Spring 2020

The Louisville Distance Project is the most comprehensive training program that Louisville has to offer. By partnering with local health and fitness professionals, product vendors, skillful coaches, LDP Ambassadors, and local race organizers, our program provides an unparalleled training experience. Whether you're a seasoned marathoner or looking to do the Louisville Triple Crown of Running and/or the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon for the first time ever, these groups are designed to help meet your needs as you crush your goals! Spring training starts on Monday, January 6th at 6:30 PM. Thereafter, and for the duration of the training season, this group will meet every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 PM as well as Saturdays at 8:00 AM. This group is open to runners and walkers of all paces. Our 16 week training program is specifically designed to fully prepare you to run 5k Fitness Classic, City Run 10k, and the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k as well as the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini & Full Marathon, but we can make training schedule adjustments to accommodate different goal races.

NEW THIS SEASON, we've added Saturday TRAIL long runs for those interested in training for a spring trail half marathon, such as the Backside Trail Marathon

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THIS GROUP IS RIGHT FOR YOU? The training schedule begins at 3 miles for the Triple Crown and for the KDF Mini Marathon and at 6 miles for the KDF Full Marathon, so if you can run, run/walk, or walk one of those distances to start, then you can participate in this group. If you can't, don't worry! We also have a 5k program as well. Please email myrdin@fleetfeetlouisville for further details.

Our half and full marathon training groups are starting on Monday, January 6. Stop by the store on Friday, January 3rd between 4:00 and 7:00 pm to get everything you need to kick off the season! At this Open House event you can pick up your copy of the training plan, your discount card, and any gear or shoes needed to get you started. We will have our Coaches and Mentors on hand to answer questions about the season to set you up for success!

Welcome to the first group run of the season! We always start easy for both training groups. Be prepared to spend some time before the run to meet with your mentors and hear a brief overview of how our weekly store run workouts will be organized. We ask that you have at least three points of visibility due to the timing of this evening's run.

Both groups will be running easy miles. Be prepared to spend some extra time before the run meeting with your mentor and going over organizational procedures as we may have some who were not able to join us for the session on Monday. Please wear three points of visibility due to the timing of this evening's run.

DAY 5 LDP Monday Workout 1/13

Monday, Jan 13th 6:30pm

Our SAUCONY representative will be in the store tonight so you can try out either a Hurricane, Triumph, Ride, or Guide. Please plan on coming a bit early to be able to get your size. Note, weather may be a factor in this event, so updates will be made if applicable.

Tonight's workout will be a TEMPO run. Both groups will start at the store and run an easy pace to Seneca park. Once at Seneca, both groups will pick up their pace to run faster, and complete two loops. Then you will run back to the store for an easy mile (similar to a cool down).

DAY 6 LDP Wednesday Workout 1/15

Wednesday, Jan 15th 6:30pm

Tonight will be our first HILL REPEAT session. The purpose of hills is to build endurance and is not a speed workout. All workouts will start at the lamp post and the hill is clearly marked with 200, 400, and 600 meter intervals. As part of the workout, you will run a half mile to a one mile warm up and cool down. 

Half marathon group will run 4 x 200 meters with a 200 meter recovery (jog or walk downhill). Those who are more experienced may run 4 x 400 meters with a 400 meter recovery. 

Marathon group will run 6 x 200 meters with a 200 meter recovery (jog or walk downhill). Those who are more experienced may run 6 x 400 meters with a 400 meter recovery. 

Parking at and around the Rugby/Frisbee Field is often limited, so plan accordingly.

This will be our first speed session of the season and will meet at Waggener High School Track. Both groups will start with a half mile to one mile warm up and finish with the same distance as a cool down.

Marathon group will be running 4 x 200 meters, and 2 x 400 meters,  with a 200 meter recovery between sets.

Please note, River City Races will be holding the Snowman Shuffle 4 miler at Cherokee Park. While this race is not an official part of our training plan, many in the group will most likely be participating. First official race of the season! Please plan on meeting at the Fleet Feet tent for a group photo half and hour prior to race start. Race will take place near Slugger Field, tentatively at 8 am. Additional information will be posted as it is made available. 

Half Marathon group will run the race plus an additional 6 miles, for a 9.2 mile long run morning. 

Marathon group will run the race plus an additional 13 miles, for a 16.2 mile long run morning. 

Optional for those not running either race, the trail group will be running 6 miles at Harrod's Creek.

Due to the current COVID-19 health crisis this race has been cancelled and turned into a virtual option. Participants should check their email for messaging from the race directors. It is our understanding that all items, including the medal, will be mailed to you. 

All running is to be done on your own, there are no scheduled group runs from Fleet Feet until further notice. 

Half Marathon group will run the race plus an additional 3 miles, for a 9.2 mile long run morning.

This is the premier workout for runners which includes total body strengthening for performance and injury prevention, helping to build enduring core strength and staminia. DAY 60 POSTPONED - KDF Mini/Marathon

It is with an abundance of caution and based on new recommendations surrounding COVID-19, that the 2020 Kentucky Derby Festival, and the Derby Festival miniMarathon, Marathon and Relay have been postponed. There are a lot of moving parts, as you can imagine, and once all the details finalized, there will be a  new schedule with other event dates.
